“Just as the wave can not exist for itself, but is ever a part of the heaving surface of the ocean, so must I never live my life for itself, but always in the experience which is going on around me.” Albert Schweitzer As the world celebrate World Photography Day 2021, I would like to honor my photographer friend Abul Kalam whose selfless dedication to serve his people through his passion in photography by showing to the world what a Rohingya is inside a refugee camp. Through the lens of his camera he takes us to the time his people struggled as they undertook the arduous journey to come to Bangladesh. He shows us a daily glimpse of what life is inside the refugee camps and he silently captures and preserves the milestones of his people; their ups and downs in life; the innocent joy of the children coming together to play outside their shelters; the unbearable sorrow and anguish that painted their bare faces when they reached the shore of Bangladesh. All these he documents in the hopes that the international communities will be aware of the Rohingya, of their plights and continued oppression to this day to let us know that they too are human beings with emotions just like us, deserving to be really seen and be heard, not forgotten and to appeal to us that they be fully accepted by society. While doing this service to his people, Abul Kalam also struggles and sacrifices a lot for there is little to earn as a photographer and so much memories to be kept close to his soul to pass on to the next generations of Rohingya as their source of inspiration to motivate them to become a well learned and good abiding citizens. And for us, a lesson learned so that our society will not make the same mistakes and commit atrocities and bring nightmare to the innocent and defenseless people. As a photographer, Abul has immortalized all the emotions of his people in each of his photo that conveys to the world the thoughts and the silent pleas of his people. He too yearns to go back to his homeland and longs to see his people freed from the political chain that shackles them and hinder their souls to soar high to fly and their dreams be made into reality. The amount of abuse and the harassments that they have had to deal with every day wherever they go is adding to their long list of sufferings. As every nation moves towards progress that progress must also factor in the Rohingya. A majestic light in the sky. It is an awesome moment, breathtaking even to witness such a grandeur beauty of the twilight that it takes us away to a magical place. Such a reprieve to us who only see endless darkness and gloom and with that sight brings a new hope that shines on us, reminding us that in every dark clouds shines a silver lining. She is left to take care of her three children and raise them all by herself as best as she could because her husband died while traveling to Malaysia.
